SMRT: Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique
The origins of Roots to Bloom bodywork began with supporting women in birth, and the comfort measures that naturally evolve while tending women during this time. It is bodywork that works with the central nervous system, as well as presenting movement patterns. What this means is that we never force the tissues, and we listen to what the body is saying. The primary methodology is SMRT (Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique), which is bodywork that is osteopathic in nature. Within the massage therapy field, this would be recognized as "strain/counter-strain", "joint mobilizations" or "muscle energy techniques".
SMRT releases deeply without pain, hard pressure, and little to no post session recovery. Because the releases are working with presenting patterns to bring balance (technically, homeostasis) to the muscle, best use of the muscle is available immediately. The releases are initiated by the central nervous system, which creates a very relieving and relaxing sensation in the body.
The experience feels like firm, palpating (reading or "listening" to the tissues) Swedish style strokes that find the issue, and adding a local joint mobilization (or "hold") that brings the origins and insertions (each end) of the muscle together to mimic a muscular contraction at a very small percentage. This hold creates a conversation between the nervous system and the muscle, allowing it to release.
The beauty of this technique is that it's simple in it's delivery as well as it's outcome, and the results are very muscle specific. Due to it's strong dependency on excellent anatomy skills and vocabulary, it is an ideal adjunct to those working with essential medical providers such as physical therapists, midwives and obgyns, and surgeons.
